From Farm to Festival: The Heart Behind Purlicue Pinch

From Farm to Festival: The Heart Behind Purlicue Pinch

Every hat has a story—and so does the maker.

Recently, I had the incredible honor of being featured in a local online publication, where I got the chance to share a bit of my journey: from life in Mississippi and years spent as a Therapeutic Riding Instructor, to launching a hat business that has completely changed my life.

When I made my very first custom hat, I had no idea it would lead me here. I was simply looking for a creative outlet—something meaningful that was mine. What started as a spark of curiosity has grown into something much deeper: a business that blends art, purpose, and storytelling, one hat at a time.

Purlicue Pinch was born out of a need to create with heart and intention. Every design is one-of-a-kind, handcrafted using repurposed materials and vintage elements. My goal is to make hats that feel as unique as the people who wear them—pieces that turn heads, start conversations, and maybe even inspire someone to embrace their own boldness.

In the interview, I also talk about the bumps along the way (hello, rained-out markets and SEO mysteries), the joy of connecting with customers face to face, and the pure magic of seeing someone light up when they find their hat.

One of my proudest moments? Creating a custom piece for the wildly talented Sharde Thomas of The Rising Stars Fife and Drum Band—and seeing her wear it on the cover of Living Blues Magazine. Moments like that remind me just how powerful a simple hat can be when it's made with love and a little bit of grit.

Thanks for being part of this journey with me. Whether you’ve cheered me on, worn one of my creations, or simply stopped by to say hello at a market—you’ve helped make this dream real. And I can’t wait to see what’s next.

With gratitude,
Dawn
